It seems like everywhere you look; you see ads and listings for book designers, but how do you know where to find a “good” one?
Here’s a few suggestions to help:
1) Word of Mouth. This is hands down one of the best ways to find a good book designer. If someone you know well has had a good experience with a book designer, then you can trust they know what they’re doing.
However, make sure the designer has worked with your subject matter and genre. Look at their portfolio of book designs and see if they represent your book. It’s important because people who tend to read books in your genre will be drawn to similar book covers.
2) Do a search on professional sites, such as LinkedIn. When searching, look at how much experience they have. Do their posts include book designs they’ve created? Do they have a website showing books they’ve designed?
Does their website and social media look professional and display their experience well? Do you like their work? If so, message them to set up a meeting to learn more about what they could do for you.
3) Sites such as Upwork and Fiverr are a good place to find up and coming designers that may be more affordable. However, you need to research them carefully and make sure they have experience in book design. Check if they have the technical knowledge to prepare your book for your platform like KDP (Amazon), Ingram, or other book printer.
The investment you make in a professional book designer who knows their stuff will make a profound difference in the quality of the book you put out into the world. You need a professionally designed book to portray yourself as a professional.
